about junklog

What is junklog?

junklog's a web app for logging what you've read, watched, listened to and played. I wanted an easy way to log the books I had been reading similar to what John Walkenbach has been doing on his J-Walk blog.

When I thought about it I decided I wanted something that was similar to del.icio.us but for media such as books and movies. That way I could monitor my friends' media habits and get recommendations from people I trust instead of relying on the random reviews from strangers on sites like Amazon and Metacritic and so on.

How do I use it?

You sign up for an account and log in. You'll then be on your junklog page which will have zero items on it. Enter the title of a book, album, dvd or game into the box beside the word "add:" (on the yellow strip), select the appropriate item in the pulldown menu and click "search amazon".

Click on the item from the choices that appear (if nothing appears, your item might not be in the Amazon database). Then you have the option to fill out a comment, enter tags, mark whether you finished it or not (plus a date) and rate it. Click save and your item should be listed on your log page.

Send that page to your friends and they can keep an eye on what you've been into lately.

Can I use my own Amazon Associate ID?

If you have an Amazon Associate ID, you can put that in on the edit account page and you should earn a referral kickback if anyone clicks through and buys links that you've logged (both on the site and in the RSS feeds.)

Can I post my latest logged items to my blog?

If you go to this page you can get your last X number of items as an HTML list from the category of your choice. You should be able to post this to your weblog.

You could also embed the RSS feeds in your sidebar or something along those lines.

I'll probably work on some better blogging implementation if there's interest.

What browsers does junklog work in?

I've tested it in IE6 and Firefox 1.5.

I have a suggestion or something's broken!
